What is IPL Hair Removal and Is It For Me?

WHAT IS IPL HAIR REMOVAL?

If you're not happy with shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, IPL hair removal may be an option worth considering.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a modern type of laser hair removal used for permanent/long-term hair removal.

Broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin, targeting melanin. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair follicle. As the light is absorbed, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are heated, destroying the hair-producing papilla. The results are permanent hair reduction!

What the laser accomplishes, after it's reached into the interior of the skin, is to
focus on the hair's pigment. The laser destroys the follicle of the hair but does not damage the remaining hair tissue around it.

IS IPL SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?

Two of the most important elements to consider in qualifying potential IPL hair
removal candidates are skin color and hair color.

1. Skin Color- Light skin makes IPL hair removal easier to perform. Due to the
lighter pigmentation, the lPL hair removal results happen more quickly.

People with darker skin can be treated, but results are slower. They just have
to be content with the knowledge that it will take longer to see results and a
greater number of treatments are probably going to be needed.

2. Hair Color- IPL hair removal works best on dark hair. The reason for the
difference is the pigment pheomelanin, which is found only in red or blonde
hair. It is very hard for a laser to penetrate pheomelanin. On the other hand,
the laser goes easily through eumelanin, the pigment found in black and
brown hair.

Everyone responds differently to IPL, and most people will need multiple rounds of the treatment before they start to notice results.

DOES IPL WORK ON ALL HAIR COLORS?

IPL relies on the melanin in the hair absorbing the light energy, and therefore IPL is not effective on blonde, white, red, or grey colored hair.

WHO SHOULDN’T GET IPL TREATMENT?

Talk to your doctor first if you:

  • Are pregnant

  • Take medication for other conditions

IPL isn’t a good idea if you:

  • Are sensitive to light
  • Have recently tanned your skin using sunlight, tanning beds, or tanning creams
  • Might have skin cancer
  • Use a retinoid cream
  • Are very dark-skinned
  • Have a skin resurfacing disorder
  • Have severe scarring
  • Have keloid scar tissue

If you are unsure about IPL treatments, be sure to talk to your doctor or dermatologist for medical advice.
